Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is a very natural state. We all do it at some stage during our day.

Have you noticed how you can be so absorbed in a book that you failed to notice events around you?

Perhaps you drove home and didn’t notice the miles of road you covered?

These are forms of hypnosis. Whilst we are in this altered state of consciousness, our subconscious is accessible and we are more open to suggestion*. Whilst in a hypnotised (but always conscious and aware) state, therapists (Hypnotherapists) are able to access the subconscious mind and provide positive, direct and indirect suggestions/therapy to neutralise existing falsely held beliefs and replace them with true, positive beliefs that will alleviate symptoms or behaviours that you wish to change. Hypnosis on its own will not create change however, but in conjunction with therapy, great changes can occur.

Why choose hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is very different from any other type of therapy and that is because it enables therapy/suggestion to be applied directly to the subconscious mind, which can create a more effective, speedier outcome for the client. The reason is that all our beliefs and therefore hang-ups/anxieties/phobias and neurosis are stored in the subconscious mind and so it is necessary to assess this area of the mind in order to facilitate the necessary change for the client to achieve their goals.

Working with normal counselling therapies through the conscious mind will take a lot longer and may not be as effective because the conscious mind/conscious critical faculty itself will act as a filter before allowing any access to the subconscious mind.

Your conscious critical faculty is the part of the brain that sits as a filter between the conscious mind and the sub-conscious mind. It contains as a database of your beliefs built over your life and these beliefs are based on your life experiences and interactions with other people in your life and they may be correct or incorrect assumptions. The conscious critical faculty filter accepts and interprets information constantly and works out in split seconds whether the information being received is “correct or incorrect” depending on the interpretation that is stored in the subconscious mind.

An example of this could be someone with a strong phobia of spiders and even though they “consciously” and logically knew that the spider was not going to hurt them, this did not stop them jumping on the chair and screaming in fear. What has happened is that they learned in their early formative years from seeing someone else’s reaction that spiders were to be feared and they have taken that fear on as a belief in their own subconscious mind. This belief is then stored and cemented over with the CCF (conscious critical faculty). So whenever that person sees a spider, she may logically think, they won’t hurt me, the mind goes to check the CCF and finds that she is wrong, there is a information in here from past experience that spiders will hurt her. This is a false belief but it is the overriding one (as the subconscious mind usually wins), so you can see how easily people get stuck with irrational fears.

Hypnosis is the most effective mechanism we have for bypassing the CCF and getting into the non-judgmental, non-logical subconscious and allowing us to change the incorrectly held beliefs that are sitting there restricting us in some way.

Although Hypnotherapy is an excellent form of therapy, it is not a cure-all and there may be some conditions that are served better through other therapies. On initial consultation, I will of course be happy to assess your needs and we can mutually decide the best plan for you.

I am also equipped with techniques such as counselling skills and NLP and these do not require you to be under hypnosis if this is preferred. I often use varying combinations of them all depending on what is required because we are all different.

There are many myths about Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy which have been hyped up by television “performers” during stage hypnosis (it is called “stage” for a reason) and understandably that can sometimes cause unnecessary anxiety or concern about this form of therapy, particularly when it comes to feeling in control. I am happy to speak to you on the phone or meet with you for a Free Initial Consultation to explain the process and allay any concerns you may have.
